3.3.29. Barcode Scanning - General Guidelines

To ensure optimal barcode reading results please follow the guidelines below:

1. Use black code on white background;
2. Alternatively use a dark color on the code and a light color on the background;
3. Make sure the code has at least 1.2 inches or 3 centimeters;
4. Make sure to leave empty space around the barcode, at least 0.2 inches or 0.5 centimeters for a 3 centimeters code;
5. Make sure there are no markings or handwriting over the code (specially for 2D barcodes);
6. ChronoScan can deal with barcode rotation very well but it is good practice to make sure the orientation of the barcode matches the orientation of the page and skew is minimal from one barcode to the next;
7. Consistency is very important when placing the barcode on the page. Making sure the barcode is placed on the same place of the page every time can prevent several possible problems;
8. When scanning, make sure little to no image compression is used (ideally use tiff file format with no compression or PDF file format with no compression) and resolution is at least 300 dpi;

This is valid for 1D and 2D barcodes. 2D barcodes will require special consideration to the guidelines above because they have added complexity.
