ChronoScan is installed from a single setup that includes everything it needs: the program, the OCR engines (ChronoScan OCR and Tesseract), the PDF tools and the Microsoft components it depends on. There are two builds:
ChronoScanSetup.exe (32-bit): the standard build, installed under Program Files (x86). Use it when your scanner only ships a 32-bit TWAIN driver (very common) or when you depend on 32-bit ODBC drivers or a 32-bit Office.
ChronoScanSetupx64.exe (64-bit): same features, with more memory for large batches and faster OCR with the Nuance engine. Use it with 64-bit TWAIN drivers, 64-bit ODBC drivers and 64-bit Office components.
Rule of thumb: install the build with the same bitness as the scanner TWAIN driver and the database drivers you will use. If the scanner does not appear in the source list after installing, try the other build. The two builds can coexist on the same PC and share the same configurations.
Prerequisites
Windows 10 or Windows 11, or Windows Server 2016 or later. See System requirements.
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 (included in current Windows versions).
Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 runtime and the Microsoft Access Database Engine: the setup installs them if they are missing.
A TWAIN driver from the scanner manufacturer if you scan paper. Avoid the WIA sources that Windows creates by itself.
Optional: the Nuance OCR plug-in (OmniPage v22), a separate licensed download in 32-bit and 64-bit versions; see OCR engines.
What the setup creates
The program goes to the Program Files folder (Bin subfolder with ChronoScan.exe and the modules). Jobs, batches, lists, connections and logs live in a configuration folder under C:\ProgramData\ChronoScan: see Start Screen and Launcher and Where things live. Nothing of your data is stored under Program Files, so the program can be reinstalled or updated without losing jobs or batches.
Updating
Install the new version over the existing one; configurations, jobs and batches are kept. ChronoScan checks for new versions and shows them in the Update Manager (About window). Enterprise installations must update the server and the workstations to the same version.
Licensing
After the installation the program runs in evaluation mode. Activate it from the License Manager or sign in to the ChronoScan HUB; see Licenses, HUB and credits.
